Faculty chat with Naomi Oreskes

What is the role of scientists in today’s society? Should scientists speak up about politically sensitive topics? If so, how? Is the planned March for Science in April a good idea?

Come join us for an informal discussion over lunch with Professor Naomi Oreskes to discuss these and other topics. Prof. Oreskes has extensive experience studying the intersection of science and policy. Among Professor Oreskes’ work is the 2010 book Merchants of Doubt, which exposed how corporate and ideological interests have worked to undermine science and interfere with political action to address issues ranging from tobacco smoking to climate change. Prof. Oreskes also gave the plenary address at the recent AAAS meeting on the topic of scientists and political engagement entitled: “The Scientist as Sentinel.” She is currently Professor of the History of Science and Affiliated Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
